ABOUT KEVIN

Kevin was born 22nd February 1972 at Farnaby Road Eltham. He was the youngest of three brothers. When he was five he went to Eldham Square school. He then went on to Eltham Green School when he was eleven. On leaving school at sixteen he joined Royal Mail where he stayed until June 2003. For fifteen years he was a volunteer on the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway. He started with his brother Andrew, Andrew left when he got married but Kevin stayed on and learnt all there was to know about the railway. He then passed out as an engine driver. Kevin was in his glory because he had his dream job. Whenever we visited the railway and saw Kevin he always had a big smile on his face. Because he enjoyed what he was doing. He always had a passion for trains and trams. He had a large collection of tram and train videos, books and a large collection of model trams. He enjoyed visiting Blackpool to see the trams on his holidays. If we did not go away he spent his holiday at the R.H.D.R. Kevin lost his life after a tragic accident in which his locomotive 'Hercules' was struck by a car at the Burmarsh Road level crossing in 2003. He lived his life to the full.

THE POEM

FOR KEVIN CROUCH - ENGINE DRIVER

You drove an engine, a beautiful machine,
'Twas glowing and red, 'twas a childhood dream.
In 'Hercules' you rode the line,
A man of pride in your glorious prime.
You died so young we can barely believe,
And there are many here who will cry and grieve.
But it must be said, though this hour be tragic,
That you dwell in peace in a land of magic.
For you lived and died doing what you loved best,
And few men achieve this, the ultimate quest.
So rest in glory 'cos your legacy lives,
In this place of wonder, the best the world gives.

Sunday 4th September 2005

Kevin Crouch was tragically killed on the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch miniature railway when the train he was driving collided with a car at an un-manned level crossing in August 2003. The Railway will be running a special train in his memory to raise funds to create a station garden located at Dymchurch Train Station. This garden will be named after Kevin and be available for the use of customers and those who knew Kevin to remember him. The special train will be double-headed by Hercules and Northern Chief (subject to availability) and will travel almost 40 miles non-stop. It will be leaving New Romney at 1330hrs and travel to Hythe via Dungeness and then return to New Romney at around 1615hrs

Margaret, Andy and Nigel would like to thank all those who attended the Special Memorial Train on Sunday 4th September 2005. I am sure that you will all agree that it was a fantastic day which was thoroughly enjoyable for all concerned. It was very nice to see so many people supporting the railway and Memorial Garden Project.Over £2000 was raised. This will enable work to begin on the garden very soon.
